Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
The birth of Ava DuVernay was on August 24 on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was a little girl. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Even though DuVernay lived within Compton with her parents, she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still in university. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to watch and search the home of a particular Jury member. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
